Spencer (Spence) Hammond
Instructor

Hometown:
Malibu, CA
Favorite food:
Most of my favorite foods have complex spices. And the chili is the king of spices.
Favorite Local Hangout:
Not sure of a favorite, but there are a number of great hangouts in California that are under 40 feet below sea level. We'll check one or two out in the next class.
Why did you become an instructor?
Really I became an instructor to teach diving to some family members who live near a dive resort in the Philippines. I've continued instruction for fun and I enjoy being around divers when they discover and rediscover diving opportunities and develop greater appreciation for the ocean.
Favorite dive site:
Favorite dive site? Always the next site I'm planning to dive. Even if I've dove it before, the dynamic marine world always shows you something different and often something surprising.
Favorite type of diving:
Probably wreck diving, no maybe night diving. We'll scooter diving is wild--and UW photography lets you bring back a view of what you've seen and done. But I can't rule out coral reef diving, kelp dives, or just "go-and-find-out-what-is-out-there" diving.
Best dive you've ever been on?
How about the best two? Sanctuary at Balicasag Island, R.P. July 2005. Akitsushima (a seaplane tender, sunk in the Battle of Coron Bay, 23 or 24 September 1944), Coron Bay, Palawan, R.P., dove June 2008.
Worst dive you've ever been on?
Got pretty beat up by the surf on a beach dive once. Learned to respect the surf.
If you could dive anywhere in the world where would it be?
How about two spots-North Sulawesi, Indonesia; Truk Lagoon, Micronesia.
Anything you'd like to add?
When you face obstacles, the best revenge is to eat better, dive more, and outlive the heck out of everyone else...
